Convicted killer Yongki doesn't fear execution

Convicted killer Yongki doesn't fear execution

JAKARTA (JP): Even though the date of his execution is
believed to be just few days away, 35-year-old convicted murderer
Kartacahyadi, alias Yongki, has shown no fear to face a group of
armed personnel who will end his life.

"I'm fine and in good condition," Yongki told The Jakarta Post
early this week.

The convicted murderer said he was ready to face capital
punishment although he had no idea of the date of his execution.

On Monday, head of the City Prosecutors Office, Soeyoto, said
Yongki's execution is all prepared.

The implementation "is only waiting for the decree from the
Central Java Prosecutors Office," Soeyoto said.

"The execution will be carried out here," he said but refused
to explain exactly where.

Executions remain closed to the public, despite criticism and
demands that the authorities review the law and allow the public
to view executions in order to deter other would-be criminals.

In most cases, a group of 10 mobile brigade police officers
are assigned to carry out executions.

Of the 10 personnel, some of them unknowingly have unloaded
rifles.

"So nobody knows who shoots the convicted person," a senior
police general told the Post recently.

Yongki, a resident of Jakarta, was sentenced to death by the
district court in Surakarta, Central Java, in 1990 for the brutal
murder of three people during a house burglary.

The house Yongki robbed belonged to Utomo Kasidi, a distant
relative of his. The three victims were Utomo's 11-year old son
Danny, Utomo's 40-year-old brother Sasongko Suryo, and a 23-year
old housemaid, Lasiyem.

The government has agreed to Yongki's request that he be
executed in Jakarta.

Yongki's accomplice, Tugiman, also received the death sentence
and is waiting for a reply from the president to his request for
clemency.

The convicted men made off with valuables they found in the
house, and Utomo's car. The total loot was estimated to have been
worth about Rp 40 million (US$18,000). (bsr)
