Converting Petrol Motorcycles to Electric Actually Requires Over 20 Components

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The conversion of petrol motorcycles to electric motorcycles is often considered a simple process. Many people think that the electric motorcycle conversion process only involves replacing three main components, namely the battery, electric motor (dynamo), and controller (ECU). In reality, it is not that straightforward. The conversion process requires the replacement of many components so that the motorcycle can function properly and be used safely. “To make it a converted motorcycle, there are about 20 items of components. So actually, what people often understand about conversion is just the battery and ECU, but it’s not that simple,” said Tomy to Kompas.com on Monday (6/4/2026). “There are many other components like battery packs, cables, DC-DC, DPS, pulley, and so on. The total can be around 20 to 25 items,” he said. The number of components that must be adjusted becomes one of the challenges in the electric motorcycle conversion programme. Nevertheless, Tomy sees that from a technical readiness perspective, the industry is considered sufficiently prepared. The availability of components and technological support makes the conversion process now easier to carry out compared to a few years ago. “However, all those components are already available at BRT. We have also prepared products for approximately 30 types of motorcycles that are statistically the most widely used in the current market,” said Tomy.
