Converted Vehicles Increasingly Undergoing Type Testing
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Centre for Vehicle Roadworthiness Testing and Motor Vehicle Certification (BPLJSKB) is responsible for conducting type testing on vehicles intended for circulation in Indonesia.
Currently, BPLJSKB not only conducts type testing for new vehicles but also for vehicles resulting from conversions from petrol-fuelled engines to electric propulsion.
The Head of BPLJSKB, Iman Sukandar, explained that the vehicle conversion process cannot be done arbitrarily.
“(The application) comes from workshops, so certified conversion workshops. There are categories A and B, if I’m not mistaken,” said Iman to Kompas.com in Bekasi, West Java, on Tuesday (5/5/2026).
Category A conversion workshops generally have greater capacity and more complete equipment, while category B has a more limited scope of work.
The Head of the BPLJSKB Service Section, Tri Bowo Leksono, stated that his agency now frequently receives type testing requests for converted vehicles.
Bowo said the number of certified conversion workshops continues to increase along with rising public interest in electric vehicles.
“About 60 (workshops) for these conversion workshops,” Bowo remarked.
The testing covers various aspects, from the safety of the electrical system, vehicle performance, to the suitability of the components used.
In practice, converted vehicles can obtain documents such as the Type Test Certificate (SUT) or Type Test Registration Certificate (SRUT), depending on the type and testing scheme.
These documents serve as the legal basis for vehicle registration and operation on the road.
