Controversy Over Deddy Sitorus's 'Circus' Remark Leads to MKD Report
The controversy surrounding statements made by PDIP Faction member of Commission II, Deddy Sitorues, regarding a ‘circus-like’ atmosphere during a parliamentary meeting is escalating. The Parliamentary Journalists Coordinator (KWP) has now reported Deddy Sitorus to the House Ethics Council (MKD) of the DPR.
The incident began on Thursday, 30 July 2026, when journalists were monitoring a Commission II meeting at the Senayan building in Jakarta. As Deputy Speaker of the House, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, entered the meeting room, journalists moved in to document his arrival. Shortly after, Deddy Sitorus was heard making remarks involving the word ‘circus’ and ‘upwards’. The KWP expressed strong objection to these statements.
Erwin Syahputra, Vice Chairman of Administration for the KWP, stated that the group felt insulted and demeaned by the lawmaker’s comments. The KWP had initially provided a 24-hour window for Deddy Sitorus to issue a public apology, which was not met. “We feel insulted and demeaned by the member of the DPR… his actions and words, stating that we journalists are like a circus troupe, is an extraordinary form of harassment,” Syahputra said during a press conference.
Conversely, Deddy Sitorus has denied specifically targeting journalists with the ‘circus’ label. He asserted that his protest was aimed at the administrative staff and aides who were crowding the room despite seating being provided on the balcony. “Please check the recordings; did I mention journalists? Do not slander me!” Deddy stated, urging journalists to verify facts before reacting.
On Friday, 31 July, the KWP officially filed report number 78 with the MKD. The report includes video evidence of the remarks. Syahputra noted that the report was filed because Deddy refused to apologise. The KWP emphasised that their goal is to protect journalists from being looked down upon or insulted by members of Parliament.
The Chairman of the MKD, Nazaruddin Dek Gam, confirmed that the report has been received and will be reviewed. He stated that the council is currently in recess but could summon both the complainants and the accused for questioning during this period if deemed urgent. Dek Gam emphasised that the MKD will act impartially, regardless of political party affiliation.
In response to the report, Deddy Sitorus stated he has no issue with the legal action taken by the journalists. “They have the right. Eventually, it will be revealed who is lying and slandering,” Deddy told reporters, adding that he is also preparing his own legal steps regarding the matter.
