Controversial busway lane

From Media Indonesia

Jakarta will soon have its special busway, a project that,
according to the Jakarta provincial administration, meets the
aspirations of Jakarta's residents as was evident from the great
enthusiasm visitors to the Jakarta Fair expressed when they were
presented with a prototype of the project.

For the Jakarta residents themselves, however, many things are
still unanswered about this project, particularly regarding the
prospective passengers of the buses that will use this special
lane. Reportedly, the prospective passengers are those working
along Jl. Sudirman and Jl. Thamrin and going to work either by
public transportation or by private vehicle. Obviously, these
people account for only a small fraction of the population of
Jakarta.

Given the fact that the number of motorized vehicles passing
along Jl. Sudirman and Jl. Thamrin is increasing and that traffic
congestion in these streets has been caused by an insufficient
number of lanes, the establishment of this busway will only
aggravate the traffic condition. The presence of this busway also
means the loss of green areas otherwise serving as water
catchments.

The bus stops put up along the busway are also a waste of
billions of rupiah as they cannot be properly used by senior
citizens and people in wheelchairs.
