Control fauna trade: Surjadi
JAKARTA (JP): Governor Surjadi Soedirdja wants control of the breeding and trade of indigenous animals improved.
Surjadi added that flora must receive similar treatment. He made the observations when opening a working meeting on forestry yesterday.
"In this way, the illegal trade of flora and fauna, especially rare species, may be curbed," he was quoted as saying by Antara.
"Flora and fauna are potential foreign exchange commodities," he said, adding that around 20,000 birds and other kinds of pets enter the capital annually.
He said that around 450,000 animals are exported from Jakarta's seaports and airport every year.
"Therefore port officials should also be active in controlling the trade of flora and fauna," he said. (sur)
