Contractors blamed for pollution
JAKARTA (JP): Contractors building Bank Indonesia's building
on Jl. MH Thamrin have spoiled the waterway on Jl. Budi
Kemuliaan, Central Jakarta, Gambir district head Tjuk Subianto
said yesterday.
Tjuk said sanitation workers had collected 50 bags of sand and
soil spilled from cement mixer trucks.
A sanitation worker said he and other workers removed 4,000
cubic meters of mud, mostly aggregate, from the 600-meter canal.
The contractors are the state-owned Waskita Karya and Wijaya
Karya.
Tjuk said the canal had to be clean or the canal would flood
when heavy rains come.
He said the city administration had sent three warning letters
to the contractors and got no response.
"Now we are cleaning Jl. Budi Kemuliaan and the canal in the
hope that the contractors would realize their wrong doing," Tjuk
was quoted by Antara as saying. (sur)
