The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has recorded that, after experiencing a continuous eruption episode lasting 25 hours, Mount Anak Krakatau in Lampung Province has returned to eruptive activity with a pattern of mild eruptions occurring periodically. Although the long eruption episode has ended, volcanic activity at Mount Anak Krakatau continues to be monitored because the seismicity level remains high.

For communities in the coastal areas of Banten and Lampung, developments in the activity of Mount Anak Krakatau are a concern due to the potential eruption hazards. The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has reminded residents, tourists and climbers not to approach or conduct activities within a 3-kilometre radius of the volcano’s activity centre.

The Head of the Geological Agency, Lana Saria, explained that the continuous eruption episode of Mount Anak Krakatau, which had been under way since Friday (4/9) at 23.07 WIB, ended on Sunday (6/9) at 00.04 WIB. After that period, eruptive activity returned to the characteristics of mild eruptions that have long been a feature of the volcano’s activity.

“After the continuous eruption episode ended, three Strombolian eruptions with black eruption columns were observed. The return of Strombolian eruptions, which are a distinctive characteristic of Mount Anak Krakatau, is for the time being interpreted as the end of that rather long continuous eruption episode,” said Lana Saria, quoted on Monday (7/9/2026).

Although the continuous eruption episode has ended, instrumental monitoring on 6–7 September 2026 still recorded high seismic dynamics, including:

  • 3 eruption earthquakes

  • 9 blowing earthquakes

  • 93 low-frequency earthquakes

  • 98 hybrid/polyphase earthquakes

  • 4 continuous tremor earthquakes

  • 1 shallow volcanic earthquake

Given these conditions, the activity level of Mount Anak Krakatau remains at Level III (Standby). Lana Saria stated that the likelihood of eruptions in the coming periods remains high.

“The main potential hazards are incandescent rock projectiles and heavy ash fall, as well as the potential for lava flows if continuous eruptions occur again,” Lana explained.

In line with the Standby status, the Geological Agency of the Ministry of ESDM has urged communities affected by volcanic ash to reduce outdoor activities or use masks to avoid respiratory problems. Residents in the coastal areas of Banten and Lampung are also asked to remain calm and not to believe hoaxes linking the eruption to tsunami potential.

“Communities in the coastal areas of Banten and Lampung should remain calm and not believe hoaxes linking the eruption to potential tsunamis. Residents are asked to carry on their activities as usual while continuing to follow the directions of the local disaster management agency (BPBD),” Lana said.

The Geological Agency of the Ministry of ESDM, through the Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), continues to monitor the activity of active volcanoes in Indonesia, including Mount Anak Krakatau. Specific monitoring is carried out through two observation posts:

  • Pasauran Observation Post, Cinangka District, Serang Regency, Banten Province

  • Kalianda Observation Post, Hargo Pancuran Village, Rajabasa District, South Lampung Regency, Lampung Province

With continued monitoring and public compliance with safety recommendations, it is hoped that developments in the activity of Mount Anak Krakatau can continue to be managed through mitigation measures based on volcanic information and observation.
