Contest to Capture Tapir Alive in Mesuji with Rp 50 Million Prize Cancelled

The Bengkulu-Lampung Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BBKSDA) has withdrawn an announcement for a contest with a Rp 50 million prize to capture a tapir alive in Mesuji, Lampung. The policy was cancelled because it was deemed to potentially trigger wildlife poaching and reveal the location of protected animals. “In principle, there is indeed no need for a contest. We are concerned that sensitive information will become known to the public and turn into a new hunting ground,” said the Head of the KSDA Section for Lampung Region III, Itno Itoyo, as reported by detikSumbagsel on Monday (6/7/2026). According to Itno, offering a cash reward could potentially invite crowds of people to flock to the tapir’s location. This situation is feared to be difficult to control and could threaten the safety of both the animal and the public. The Bengkulu-Lampung BBKSDA, together with the Mesuji Regency Government, issued an official announcement stating that all contest pamphlets have been revoked and are no longer valid. In the leaflet, the old pamphlet is crossed out in red with the words ‘We Apologise, Revoked’. The public is prohibited from capturing, keeping, or relocating wild animals. Residents are asked to contact official officers if they find wild animals entering residential areas. “Do not try to capture, keep, or move the animal yourself, as it can endanger the safety of both humans and the animal. Let us continue to protect our wildlife and nature so that they remain sustainable,” read the appeal in the announcement.
