Jakarta (ANTARA) - A container truck carrying a 45-tonne load of iron struck a highway barrier after suffering suspected brake failure on the descent of the Rawa Buaya flyover, Cengkareng, West Jakarta, on Monday afternoon. The truck sustained heavy damage. Although there were no fatalities, traffic flowing from Kembangan towards Cengkareng experienced prolonged congestion.

At the scene, police officers and officials from the Transport Agency (Dishub) carried out an evacuation using a large tow truck. During the evacuation process, parts of the road were temporarily closed to prevent further traffic disruption.

The accident began as the trailer truck, travelling from Tangerang towards Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, was moving at moderate speed. Two men were inside the vehicle. Upon reaching the descending section of the Rawa Buaya flyover, the truck’s brakes are suspected to have failed. To avoid colliding with other vehicles and causing casualties, the driver attempted to control the vehicle by swerving to the right, eventually hitting the road barrier.

“The load was heavy, and there was heavy traffic with many people around when the brakes failed. Ultimately, it veered to the right,” said the truck’s assistant, Aldi, to reporters at the scene on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Traffic Sub-unit Chief of Cengkareng Police, Ipda Tugiyono, stated that authorities immediately attended the scene and coordinated with the Transport Agency to evacuate the vehicle and alleviate traffic density. “Following the handling process, the trailer truck was taken to the West Jakarta Transport Agency office for further inspection. The police are also still investigating the exact cause of the accident,” said Tugiyono.

As a result of the incident, traffic from Kembangan towards Cengkareng experienced significant delays. However, once the evacuation process was completed, traffic conditions gradually returned to normal.
