Container Truck Crushes Corolla in Karawang, Killing Three
Three people died in an accident involving a container truck that crushed a sedan on Jalan Raya Tanggul Rawagabus, Kondangjaya Village, East Karawang District, Karawang Regency, West Java.
Karawang Police Traffic Unit Chief AKP Sudirianto said the tragic accident occurred on Sunday evening, 15 February, involving a container truck with registration plate B 9107 UEI and a Toyota Corolla sedan with plate T 1275 KN.
The accident began when the trailer truck was travelling on a downhill stretch of road. The truck driver allegedly lost control due to insufficient awareness of the traffic flow ahead, causing the vehicle to topple onto the oncoming Toyota Corolla.
The road at the scene is a straight concrete road on a downhill gradient. Due to lack of vigilance, the container truck tilted and crushed the Toyota Corolla sedan, leaving it completely wrecked.
“We extend our condolences. This incident resulted in three fatalities and three others suffering serious injuries,” he said.
He noted that the downhill road connecting the Tanjungpura Interchange ring road to Jalan Raya Tanggul Rawagabus is not designated for large vehicles.
However, an informal traffic director — known locally as a “pak ogah” — had directed the large truck onto the road. The individual has been called in for questioning by police.
“We have also detained the container truck driver,” he said.
The traffic unit chief said the evacuation effort took over two hours due to the severity of the wreckage, with the container truck having completely crushed the sedan.
The passengers of the Toyota Corolla were trapped inside, resulting in three deaths and three others sustaining serious injuries.
Police have conducted a crime scene investigation, secured evidence, and taken statements from witnesses.
The identities of the deceased are still under investigation, whilst the injured have been rushed to the nearest hospital for intensive care.
