Construction worker falls to his death

JAKARTA (JP): A construction worker died in hospital after falling from scaffolding on the 23rd floor of the Simprug Teras Apartment project in South Jakarta yesterday.

The victim was identified as Sumarno, 42, a resident of Magetan, East Java.

Sumarno was a painter and he was believed to be responsible for painting the interiors of the rooms, a friend, who did not want to be identified, said.

Despite suffering a severe head wound, Sumarno did not die at the scene. He was rushed to Pertamina General Hospital in West Jakarta for treatment but he died a short time later.

"We don't know where his family lives in East Java so we'll put him here and wait for his boss' instruction," the friend said.

Sumarno's death raises the toll of construction workers killed at their workplace to 103 this year.

Earlier this week, Ujang, 17, died after being struck on the head by a falling block of iron at a project site on Jl. Kuningan, in Mampang Prapatan, South Jakarta. (04)
