Construction Worker Caught on CCTV Stealing Motorcycle Outside West Jakarta Post Office Arrested
A man identified by the initials SI, who works as a construction labourer, has been arrested by police in Cilegon, Banten. He was apprehended after stealing a motorcycle from the grounds of the Post Office on Jalan Dokter Susilo Raya, Grogol Petamburan sub-district, West Jakarta.
“The theft was captured on CCTV surveillance cameras. The footage shows two perpetrators breaking the motorcycle’s ignition lock using a T-key,” said AKP Alexander Tengbunan, Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit at Grogol Petamburan Police, West Jakarta Metropolitan Police, on Thursday (19 February 2026).
Alexander told investigators that the suspect admitted to stealing the motorcycle due to economic pressures ahead of Ramadan.
“From preliminary examination, the suspect, who works as a casual construction labourer, admitted to carrying out the theft out of desperation over his family’s economic needs ahead of Ramadan,” he explained.
The perpetrators stole the motorcycle by breaking its lock. Once successful, the two suspects immediately fled with the stolen vehicle.
“Armed with CCTV footage and the results of field investigations, the Criminal Investigation Unit’s pursuit team at Grogol Petamburan Police eventually managed to arrest one of the suspects, identified as SI, at his hiding place,” he said.
Police seized two stolen motorcycles from the suspect. Meanwhile, the other perpetrator, identified by the initials H, remains on the run.
“One accomplice identified as H is still being pursued by officers and has been placed on the wanted persons list,” he stated.
He urged the public to increase their vigilance against similar crimes. The suspect has now been formally declared a suspect.
“For his actions, the suspect has been charged under Article 477 of the Criminal Code, carrying a maximum sentence of seven years’ imprisonment,” he concluded.
