Constant safety is vital
Constant safety is vital
From Merdeka
Business tycoon Ciputra has said general safety and law
certainty are prerequisites for conducting business.
The recent riots in Tasikmalaya, Tanah Abang, Rengasdengklok,
Karawang and the rumors about unrest in Bandung, following the
destruction of a textile mill in Sumedang, have disturbed the
business climate. This situation tends to discourage foreign
businessmen to invest here. The government is expected to
immediately overcome the situation so businessmen can continue
their activities in tranquility.
Indonesian people who appreciate peace and quiet fully support
Ciputra's statement, especially those who have suffered from
disturbances such as businessmen. Although the Armed Forces said
action would be taken against each rioter, it did not stop the
rampage in Rengasdengklok. The present situation really gives us
sleepless nights. Every time somebody in our neighborhood cries
out, we think there is a riot so fear envelops us prior to the
Idul Fitri holiday.
We should be proud of the successful efforts in our
development. The economy has made considerable progress. Many
traders ply their business from towns to villages. But military
observer Hasnan Habib was right when he said the current
situation is very sensitive. The people have curbed their anger
for a long time. Our society is paternalistic. They see and
strongly feel what the formal and non-formal leaders say, so
leaders should not exaggerate their statements which would give
rise to annoyance.
Indeed, Hasnan Habib, the people are angry and dissatisfied
with the present situation. There are people who are becoming
richer all the time with their families. When they talk they seem
willing to help the people. But the reality proves different.
They forget that when the riots occur, the people are the
victims.
