Conspiracy theory
From Sinar Pagi
The Ambon case is a tragedy for the whole country because it has marred the nation's prestige in the international community.
In my opinion supporters of the Republic of South Maluku (RMS), both at home and abroad, are behind the Ambon unrest. They are making use of the political chaos in Indonesia for their own purposes. This was proven by the many RMS flags flown when the riots in Ambon began in mid-January.
For those who wish to maintain the status quo, the situation in Ambon is very heartening. They certainly hope that the Ambon case continues and spreads to other regions in Indonesia so that the general election (which they fear) will not take place. If this occurs, status quo supporters will be safe from legal prosecution for their sins during the New Order regime.
For them the nation's unity and cohesion is of no value. Remaining free from responsibility and prosecution is far more important to them. Their safety is the priority, even at the cost of innocent people.
Accordingly, I am convinced the status quo supporters (including those still in power) have joined RMS supporters in Ambon by employing hoodlums to incite the anger of religious communities in Indonesia.
Therefore, I hope Gen. Wiranto, in his capacity as Armed Forces Commander, will peacefully settle the Ambon case. To do this, the people behind the unrest must be revealed and captured. If arrests are limited to the rioters, believe me, the Ambon case will never truly be solved.
I am greatly disturbed by the Ambon tragedy. I wish to see the Indonesian people remain united and to live peacefully in their diversity. As a member of a minority group, I have never had political ambitions. All I wish is equal rights and treatment with the majority; i.e. to practice my religion freely and peacefully as guaranteed by the 1945 Constitution.
The hoodlums hired by the provocateurs in Ambon are told to instigate and create chaos. The political criminals only use the hoodlums as shields. The government must take strict measures against the provocateurs.
I pray the government immediately restores peace in Ambon and the Indonesian people be given the strength from God to resist any provocation which could endanger the country's unity and cohesion.
