Congress No Longer Silent, Urges US Government to Scrutinise Israel's Nuclear Programme as Well, Not Just Iran's!

The United States government is now facing a clear strategic paradox. On one hand, Washington and Tel Aviv are waging war against Iran under the pretext of dismantling its nuclear programme. However, on the other hand, unusual pressure is emerging in Congress for the Donald Trump administration to acknowledge something that has long been ignored—or possibly concealed—the existence of Israel’s unannounced nuclear arsenal. In a move that deviates from bipartisan tradition, 30 Democratic Party members in the US House of Representatives, led by Joaquin Castro, have sent a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio. They are urging an end to the official policy of silence regarding Israel’s nuclear capabilities. The legislators base their demands on the principle of transparency. They assert that the risks of miscalculation, escalation, and the use of nuclear weapons in the current situation are not mere theory. They also highlight the contradiction in US policy: “We cannot build a consistent policy to prevent nuclear proliferation in the Middle East while maintaining a policy of silence towards the nuclear capabilities of one of the main parties in the ongoing conflict,” he said, as reported by Aljazeera on Thursday (7/5/2026). According to Jeremy Shapiro, this step reflects a sharp decline in traditional support for Israel within the Democratic Party. This is triggered by rising anger over civilian casualties in Gaza and Lebanon. A Pew Research Center survey shows that around 80 percent of Democratic voters now view Israel negatively and demand that the country be held accountable to the same international standards as others.
