Conglomerates Owning Cement Factories in Indonesia
The national cement industry is not only controlled by state-owned enterprises (BUMNs) but also involves several domestic and foreign conglomerates. These entrepreneurs have extensive business networks, ranging from property and energy to manufacturing. Some cement factories in Indonesia are recorded as private companies with foreign investment (PMA). The following is a list of conglomerates owning cement factories in Indonesia, compiled from data from the SIMPK (Construction Materials and Equipment Information System) of the Ministry of Public Works and the official websites of each company: Cemindo Gemilang has factories in Bayah (Banten) and Ciwandan (Cilegon). Ownership of Cemindo Gemilang is known through a Singapore-based company, WH Investments Pte. Ltd. Citing Forbes, Martua Sitorus’s wealth is estimated at around 3.25 billion US dollars in 2023. His wealth sources come from the palm oil business through Wilmar International as well as expansion into other sectors via KPN Corporation, including property and cement. German entrepreneur Ludwig Kurt Merckle is a key figure behind the ownership of PT Indocement Tunggal Prakarsa Tbk. Indocement itself is now majority-owned by Heidelberg Materials AG, part of the Merckle group. In addition, Indocement is also listed as a shareholder in PT Semen Grobogan. Merckle’s wealth is estimated at more than 6.3 billion US dollars, making him one of Germany’s richest individuals. Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn is also recorded as having ties to the cement business in Indonesia through the SCG group. PT SCG Cement Indonesia is part of The Siam Cement Public Company Limited. SCG’s ownership is under the Crown Property Bureau, Thailand’s royal investment institution. The name Aang Hidjaya also appears on the list of entrepreneurs owning cement factories in Indonesia. He is the owner of PT Sinar Tambang Arta Lestari, producer of Semen Bima, with its factory located in Ajibarang, Banyumas, Central Java. From his LinkedIn profile, Aang Hidjaya is known to have served as President Director of PT Panasia Indo Resources Tbk and has experience as a director in the Salim Group.
