The death of German logistics conglomerate Klaus-Michael Kühne on 24 August 2026 has become a focal point of public attention in Europe. He left behind a fantastic fortune, yet possesses no heirs. Consequently, his passing is altering the landscape of European wealth.

The name Klaus-Michael Kühne is renowned among global entrepreneurs. He was a conglomerate whose business interests spanned from the logistics industry to airlines.

According to Euro News, Kühne, who passed away at the age of 89 at his residence in Schindellegi, Switzerland, left wealth estimated at US$49 billion, or approximately Rp867 trillion. As he had no children, this wealth had long been prepared for transfer to the Kühne Foundation, a foundation he established with his parents in 1976.

The Kühne Foundation confirmed that its founder passed away following a prolonged illness. The foundation noted that Kühne was not only an entrepreneur and philanthropist but also a figure who shaped the organisation’s development over five decades.

Wealth prepared decades ago

Unlike a typical inheritance passed to family members, Kühne’s ownership structure was arranged so that his business assets would remain under the control of an institution with philanthropic purposes.

The Kühne Foundation stated that all of the founder’s assets will ultimately be transferred to the foundation. Thus, what is being transferred is not merely cash, but ownership of the business empire built by Kühne over many decades.

Through Kühne Holding AG, the portfolio includes significant holdings in various companies, including Kühne+Nagel, Hapag-Lloyd, Lufthansa, Brenntag, Flix, and Aenova, as well as property assets and hotel businesses. Kühne Holding confirmed that its portfolio encompasses these major companies.

With this structure, the foundation has the potential to become one of the largest philanthropic organisations by asset base in Europe.

From a family company to a global logistics giant

Much of Kühne’s wealth originated from his ownership in Kühne+Nagel, a logistics company founded by his grandfather, August Kühne, alongside Friedrich Nagel.

Kühne joined the family business in 1958. He subsequently became the company’s leader and played a vital role in its international expansion, transforming Kühne+Nagel into one of the world’s largest logistics companies, particularly in air and sea freight.

The company now employs approximately 88,000 people and operates in over 1,300 locations across around 100 countries.

However, Kühne did not stop at the family company. He built an investment portfolio that granted him significant influence within the European transport sector. One of his most important investments was Hapag-Lloyd, a global container shipping company. He was also a major shareholder in Lufthansa, Germany’s national airline.

Additionally, Kühne once held approximately one-fifth of the shares in VTG, Europe’s largest rail wagon leasing company. He purchased those shares for approximately €160 million in 2016 and sold them two years later for around €300 million.
