The Afghanistan-Pakistan border situation has grown increasingly tense following the outbreak of clashes. Afghanistan’s ruling Taliban administration is now offering a peaceful pathway to resolve the conflict.

According to reports compiled on Sunday, 1 March 2026, the Taliban government in power in Afghanistan stated that it wishes to resolve the conflict with Pakistan through dialogue and consultation. Taliban officials have indicated openness to conducting talks with Pakistani counterparts.

“We have repeatedly emphasised peaceful solutions and still wish for this matter to be resolved through dialogue,” said Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid during a press conference in Kandahar on Saturday, 28 February.

Mujahid stated that Pakistani military aircraft “continue to fly over Afghanistan”, just hours after Islamabad launched airstrikes against Kabul and Kandahar as well as other cities.

According to Mujahid, at least 13 Afghan soldiers have been killed and 22 other personnel wounded in clashes with Pakistan. Approximately 13 civilian residents were also injured.

In his statement, Mujahid described Pakistan as showing “no willingness to resolve the matter through dialogue”.

He claimed that 55 Pakistani soldiers have been killed and many others wounded in border clashes, with 19 military posts destroyed. “We have 23 bodies of Pakistani soldiers, in addition to several others who have been captured, whose number we will announce later,” Mujahid stated.

Furthermore, he denied Pakistani allegations that the Pakistani Taliban are using Afghan territory to launch attacks in Pakistani regions.

Afghanistan and Pakistan have been engaged in intense clashes since Thursday, 26 February evening. Kabul announced a border attack against Pakistan in retaliation for earlier airstrikes launched by Islamabad.

Pakistan responded by bombing several areas in Afghanistan, including the capital Kabul, Kandahar and Paktia, on Friday, 27 February morning.

Pakistani Fighter Jet Shot Down in Afghanistan

A Pakistani fighter jet crashed in the city of Jalalabad, Afghanistan, on Saturday, 28 February local time. The pilot of the Pakistani fighter jet was captured alive by Afghan authorities.

Afghan military and police authorities, according to reports, claimed on Saturday, 28 February that the Pakistani fighter jet was shot down in the Jalalabad area.

“A Pakistani fighter jet was shot down in the sixth district of Jalalabad city, and its pilot was captured alive,” said local police spokesman Tayeb Hammad in his statement.

Local residents’ accounts to news agencies indicated that the fighter jet pilot ejected from the aircraft by parachute before being captured by Afghan authorities.

In a separate statement, the military spokesman for Afghanistan’s eastern region, Wahidullah Mohammadi, confirmed that a Pakistani fighter jet was shot down by Afghan forces.

“Its pilot was captured alive,” said Mohammadi.

This announcement was made by Afghanistan after journalists on the ground heard the sound of a fighter jet flying over Jalalabad, followed by two explosion sounds from the direction of the city’s airport on Saturday, 28 February.

So far, there has been no direct response from Pakistani authorities regarding Afghanistan’s claims.
