Confirmation and Strengthening of East Sumba Marapu Governing Body Demonstrates Support for Preserving Ancestral Traditions and Beliefs

The Directorate of Faith in the Almighty God and Indigenous Communities under the Ministry of Culture has provided support for the confirmation and strengthening of the East Sumba Marapu Governing Body as part of efforts to reinforce the preservation of cultural values, traditions, and ancestral beliefs of the Marapu community.

The event marks a significant milestone for the Marapu community to strengthen customary institutions and enhance the community’s role in safeguarding cultural heritage passed down through generations. The ceremony was conducted with solemnity and attended by local elders, Marapu officials, indigenous community members, and various societal elements in East Sumba Regency.

Director of the Directorate of Faith in the Almighty God and Indigenous Communities, Sjamsul Hadi, stated that strengthening indigenous community institutions is crucial for preserving the nation’s cultural continuity. He emphasised that the Marapu community is part of Indonesia’s cultural wealth that must be preserved and passed on to future generations.

‘Marapu is not merely the cultural identity of East Sumba’s people, but also part of the archipelago’s diverse cultural and spiritual heritage, possessing noble values, local wisdom, and a spirit of living harmoniously with nature and fellow beings,’ he said.

Through this event, the East Sumba Marapu Governing Body is expected to become more cohesive in carrying out its role in preserving customs, reinforcing cultural values, and fostering dialogue and unity within the community.
