Confident Textile Industry Prepares for Sunrise Phase, Industry Minister Agus Reveals the Evidence
Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita is confident that the national textile and textile products (TPT) industry currently has a bright outlook ahead. In fact, it is now a sector with rapid development (sunrise) amid increasingly complex global dynamics.
This optimism is reinforced by the industry’s continued growth amid current economic dynamics, as well as various government efforts to strengthen competitiveness.
“According to the data we have received, we can already start turning around the narrative that the TPT sector in Indonesia is a sunset sector; in fact, we must optimistically dare to say it’s a sunrise,” said Agus Gumiwang at the Indo Intertex-Inatex 2026 exhibition in Jakarta on Wednesday, 15 April 2026.
He elaborated that Indonesia has strong economic fundamentals. This is reflected in economic growth of 5.11% in 2025. The processing industry sector even recorded growth of 5.30%, surpassing national economic growth.
The processing industry contributes 19.07% to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and dominates exports at 84.89% of total exports. Additionally, this sector absorbs 20.31 million workers, demonstrating its strategic role in the economy.
Specifically for the TPT industry, throughout 2025 it recorded 3.55% growth (year-on-year), with export value reaching $12.08 billion and a surplus of $3.45 billion, primarily driven by ready-made garment exports.
From an investment perspective, the TPT sector also shows attractiveness with realized investment of Rp20.23 trillion and absorption of 3.96 million workers, or about 19.48% of total processing industry workers.
Nevertheless, according to him, the TPT sector still faces several challenges, from rising global raw material prices and supply chain disruptions to international market demand dynamics. Therefore, strong synergy is needed between the government, associations, and business players in formulating anticipatory measures.
Furthermore, he stated that the Indo Intertex-Inatex 2026 also serves as a business matching platform that brings together national and international industry players, while opening up new partnership and investment opportunities.
