Conductive Hearing Loss: Symptoms, Causes and How to Treat It
Conductive hearing loss, which relates to the process of sound transmission in the ear, does not only affect older people. This ear health issue can strike all ages, including children and young adults.
Harim Priyono, an Ear, Nose and Throat and Head and Neck Surgeon (THT-BKL) at RSUP Nasional Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo, explains that conductive hearing loss occurs when sound waves are impeded before they reach the main hearing organ in the inner ear.
The cochlea has a crucial function: converting vibrational sound into electrical signals that are then transmitted to the auditory nerve. This process enables people to hear and understand a wide range of sounds. However, before reaching the cochlea, sound must travel through the outer and middle ears without obstruction.
Anatomically the ear is divided into three parts: the outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear. Conductive hearing loss typically originates from problems in the outer or middle ear.
Harim adds that the condition can develop gradually or appear suddenly. One common case is the accumulation of cerumen that absorbs water after bathing or swimming. The condition causes the earwax to swell and block the ear canal, resulting in a sudden reduction in hearing.
Most conductive hearing losses are temporary and can be managed with appropriate treatment or medical procedures by an ENT specialist.
If you or your child experiences reduced hearing, a sense of ear fullness that persists, or ear pain, seek an examination promptly. Early management can prevent further complications and restore hearing function.
