Conditions on Bira Island discussed

JAKARTA (JP): The Environment Impact Analysis Commission evaluated a study yesterday on the environmental conditions on Bira Island.

However, Ery Chajaridipura, head of the commission, declined to give the results of the evaluation.

Ery said that he will not comment until he has reported directly to Governor Surjadi Soedirdja.

"I cannot say anything at the moment because I must report the results of this meeting to the governor first," Ery explained.

Aboejoewono Aboeprajitno, head of the City Environment Office and secretary of the commission, also refused comment.

Yesterday's meeting was the fourth meeting regarding the Bira Island case. The commission turned down the developer's environmental audit for the third time last February because the report failed to meet the standard.

The audit is mandatory to ensure that any development will not adversely effect the surrounding environment.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the commission, the developer PT Seribu Island Paradise and non-governmental organizations. (31)
