Condition of Padang State University Student Hit by Stray Bullet on Campus
“For now, we are bearing all the costs,” stated Colonel Kav Taufiq, Head of Information for Kodam XX/Tuanku Imam Bonjol, in Padang on Tuesday (2/6/2026).
The Colonel reported that a male victim sustained injuries to his arm, while a female student from Padang State University (UNP) was hit in the thigh. Both individuals are currently receiving intensive treatment at dr Reksodiwiryo Hospital.
Colonel Taufiq noted that while Kodam XX is still conducting an investigation, the TNI will cover the medical expenses for the student and the civilian hit by the stray bullets. This action was taken to ensure the injured parties receive prompt and proper medical assistance. As of Tuesday night, medical staff at dr Reksodiarmedi Hospital were still performing surgery to remove a projectile lodged in the student’s leg. Kodam Imam Bonjol emphasised that the victims’ recovery is the top priority.
Following the incident, Kodam XX is working to gather information and conduct a thorough investigation to determine the origin of the bullets. The Pomdam XX/Tuanku Imam Bonjol has conducted inspections at both the shooting range and the incident site near the UNP Rectorate area. The Colonel did not deny that the 897/Singgalang Infantry Battalion was conducting shooting drills at the time, though it has not yet been confirmed if the bullets originated from the training area.
UNP Secretary, Erianjoni, confirmed that a student was allegedly hit by gunfire within the campus grounds. He stated that the incident occurred in the afternoon near the university rectorate, shortly after students had been celebrating the results of their proposal seminars. The sociology student sustained a wound to her thigh, and another member of a student’s family was also hit in the vicinity. The university is currently assisting the victims as they undergo intensive care at a private hospital in Padang.
