Condition of Orangutan Found Weak in Plantation Following Forest Fire Smoke
The Ministry of Forestry (Kemenhut) has evacuated an individual Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) near a community palm oil plantation in Ketapang Regency, West Kalimantan. The orangutan was found in a weak condition, suspected to be due to exposure to smoke from forest and land fires (karhutla).
The Head of the West Kalimantan Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), Murlan Dameria Pane, stated that the fire conditions around habitats and wildlife roaming areas require urgent attention, as they can affect the movement and health of wildlife. “Fires do not only impact land cover, but also have the potential to place pressure on the wildlife in the vicinity. Therefore, monitoring wildlife movement in affected areas is also essential. We appreciate the community’s reports and the cooperation of all parties, which allowed this orangutan to receive immediate help,” Murlan said in an official statement from the Ministry of Forestry.
He explained that the evacuation was carried out by BKSDA West Kalimantan together with the Indonesian Nature Rehabilitation Initiative Foundation (YIARI). The team rescued an adult male orangutan found in a weak state in a community palm oil plantation in Dusun 1 Sempurna, Kuala Satong Village, North Matan Hilir District, Ketapang Regency, on Sunday (30/8).
The Wildlife Rescue Unit (WRU) of the BKSDA West Kalimantan Region I received reports regarding the orangutan’s presence at 07:27 WIB. Following the report, BKSDA West Kalimantan and YIARI immediately deployed a team to conduct the rescue.
The orangutan had previously been monitored by YIARI’s Orangutan Protection Unit (OPU) on 16 August 2026 near the rescue site, but was still moving actively at that time. When rediscovered on Sunday morning, the orangutan was found in a weakened state within the community plantation area.
At approximately 09:13 WIB, the team performed a controlled sedation to ensure the examination and evacuation process could be conducted safely. YIARI veterinarians subsequently performed a health check and provided initial treatment, including the administration of oxygen and intravenous fluids.
The medical team also collected blood, faecal, and hair samples to support further examination. Additionally, a microchip was implanted as part of the identification and monitoring process for the individual orangutan.
During the rescue process, it was noted that the forested areas around the community plantation in Kuala Satong Village were experiencing fires that produced smoke. The field team also found no water sources near the location where the orangutan was discovered.
Based on initial observations, the orangutan’s weakened condition is suspected to be related to smoke exposure and dehydration. However, further medical examinations are required to confirm its health status and the exact cause of its condition.
Murlan ensured that once the effects of the sedation gradually wear off and the orangutan’s condition is deemed stable enough for transport, the team will immediately evacuate it to the YIARI rehabilitation centre for further observation and medical care.
In relation to this, the Ministry of Forestry has urged the public not to attempt to handle orangutans or other wildlife found near settlements, plantations, or fire-affected areas on their own. The public is requested to maintain distance, avoid disturbing or feeding the animals, and immediately report any sightings to the BKSDA or local forestry officers.
