Condition of Indonesian Survivor from Musaffah 2 Vessel Explosion in Strait of Hormuz
Jakarta — One Indonesian crew member (ABK) from the Musaffah 2 vessel explosion in the Strait of Hormuz, waters between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman, on Friday, 6 March 2026, has been reported as a survivor, suffering from burns.
“One surviving crew member has suffered burn injuries of approximately 20 per cent,” said the Indonesian Ambassador to the UAE, Yudha Nugraha, cited from Kompas TV broadcast on Monday, 9 March 2026.
“Looking at the map, this is an enclave of Omani territory in the Strait of Hormuz. The city of Khasab is the nearest city to the location of the incident, and since the beginning it has been directly handled by local authorities,” he explained.
Since receiving information about the explosion, Yudha stated that his office had communicated with the families of three Indonesian crew members currently reported as missing.
“We are also continuing to coordinate with local authorities for the search operation for the other three Indonesian crew members,” he explained.
Yudha was also unwilling to make assumptions as he awaits results from the investigation by local authorities.
“We do not wish to speculate on the cause of the explosion. What we understand is that the vessel did explode and catch fire. However, regarding the cause, we are awaiting the results of the investigation from local authorities,” he stated firmly.
When asked whether the explosion of the Musaffah 2 was connected to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to escalating tensions in the Middle East, Yudha stated that it would be premature to make such an assumption.
“The incident occurred at night, at 02.00 in the early morning, so eyewitnesses also cannot confirm what caused the explosion. We await the results of the investigation,” he explained.
However, Yudha stated that all possibilities could occur, including as a result of conflict between Iran with the United States (USA) and Israel.
The explosion occurred on the Musaffah 2 vessel as it was preparing to perform a towing operation in the Strait of Hormuz, waters between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman, on Friday, 6 March 2026.
The incident resulted in three Indonesian crew members being reported missing, whilst one other survived.
Indonesian Ambassador to the UAE, Yudha Nugraha, disclosed that the Indonesian Embassy received information regarding the incident on the same day at approximately 09.00 local time.
