Concert Called Off Behind Closed Doors
His name is Israel Houghton. Even his first name is enough to make Indonesians raise an eyebrow. “Israel?” Isn’t that the name of a country that has long been a principal actor in the conflict with Palestine?
So, before people hear his songs, read the lyrics, enjoy his raspy voice or find out who he really is, suspicion has already taken hold.
Israel Houghton is an American gospel musician. A name, of course, does not automatically indicate someone’s nationality, religion or political views.
But amid the war in Gaza and Indonesia’s unequivocal support for Palestinian independence, the name “Israel” on a concert poster in Jakarta was bound to attract attention.
This time, that attention has even led to a government ban. Indonesia says it will not grant permission for Israel Houghton to perform with Israel & New Breed in Jakarta on 24 October 2026.
The event’s name is, in fact, quite peaceful: the ’Til The Whole World Knows Tour 2026. Gospel music, praise and a promise of an evening of worship. Reading the official promotion, one might think it was an invitation to a musical church service.
But a stage is not always just a stage. People bring their bodies, voices and beliefs onto it, and often their politics too. The Indonesian government now sees a problem at precisely that point.
Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra said the government made its decision after consulting several ministries and agencies. The Grammy-winning singer will not be able to obtain a visa.
Director General of Immigration Hendarsam Marantoko said Houghton had been placed on the immigration Subject of Interest (SOI) list. If he applies for a visa to enter Indonesia, it will not be issued.
