Concerned by councillors
Concerned by councillors
From Koran Tempo
Compared to the news of the presidential runoff on Sept. 20, the recent news of the swearing-in of both provincial and regional councillors might not seem that interesting.
Yet, we have to pay serious attention to these new councillors. We should be concerned because some of them have committed crimes. There is one councillor who was reported to the police for document forgery, and others are involved in corruption.
This raises questions like how can we build a democracy and how can we bring about a change for the better if those who hold power are involved in criminal activities? We do not mean to pass judgment before these cases are heard by the courts. But I think councillors should be good, clean people with a great deal of integrity. They should also set an example for others. What will happen to this country if we are led by criminals?
So, for our future, we must remind the councillors not to forget their duties to the people. They are not serving to amass wealth, but to help the people.
