Jakarta's pollution
From Warta Kota
Air pollution in Jakarta gives cause for serious concern. In
the Gunung Sahari area of Central Jakarta, for instance, lots of
public transport vehicles foul the air and the smell of their
exhaust fumes spreads widely.
As I waited there for a bus, standing for 20 minutes was
enough to make me feel dizzy. I was sure that my headache
resulted from inhaling the polluted air.
The "Blue Sky" program, launched to make Jakarta's air clean,
has now lost its effectiveness. In my view, instead of
undertaking a highfalutin project, the Jakarta provincial
administration or city police should restrict the operation of
vehicles no longer roadworthy, because they have such a high
potential for causing pollution.
