Composer commemorated

JAKARTA (JP): The life and works of Ismail Marzuki, one of the country's most acclaimed composers, are to be celebrated through a number of events across the city.

The commemoration, called Bulan Setulus Kasih, runs from Saturday, May 4 to May 30. A workshop on the works of Ismail, who died at 44 on May 25 1958, will be held on Saturday afternoon at the city council. Composer James F. Sundah is one of the scheduled speakers.

Organizing the events is the Indonesian Foundation of Musicians, chaired by Renyda Ritonga.

On May 11-12 visitors to the Taman Ismail Marzuki arts center will be able to enjoy a Betawi traditional fair from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

On May 17, an open-stage performance of songs by Ismail will be played by Ireng Maulana, Idang Rasjidi and others at the Ancol Dreamland Park in North Jakarta.

Among at least 200 songs by Ismail are Halo-halo Bandung and Gugur Bunga.

The commemoration ends with a concert featuring violinist Idris Sardi at the Sahid Jaya Hotel on May 30. (anr)
