Components to Monitor When Switching to B50 Biodiesel
The use of B50 biodiesel fuel does not demand major changes in diesel vehicle maintenance, but an automotive expert from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Yannes Martinus Pasaribu, has cautioned that several components still need to be monitored to ensure optimal vehicle performance. Yannes noted that prior experience with B30 and B40 in Indonesia means diesel vehicles have already adapted to biodiesel content, making the transition to B50 less likely to cause the significant deposit-cleaning effects seen during the early stages of biodiesel adoption. “Maintenance for B50-fuelled vehicles is not much different from B40; essentially, it still requires discipline. Because vehicles are already accustomed to B30 and then B40, the effect of cleaning old deposits when moving up to B50 is much smaller, so the fuel filter does not need to be replaced drastically at the start,” he said when contacted from Jakarta on Wednesday. Yannes advised vehicle owners to maintain the fuel filter replacement interval according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. For older vehicles, the filter can be replaced slightly more frequently as a precautionary measure. This component is the most sensitive part of the fuel delivery system, so its condition needs to be monitored regularly. “The fuel filter remains the most sensitive component and its condition should be monitored,” Yannes stated. Besides the fuel filter, Yannes said rubber components such as seals, O-rings, and fuel hoses also need to be inspected during regular servicing. According to him, B50 biodiesel has slightly more aggressive properties, meaning these components have the potential to degrade more quickly in the long term. “Rubber components still risk faster degradation in the long term, so they need to be checked during regular servicing,” he added. He noted that the injection system and high-pressure pump in diesel engines using common rail technology are also components that require attention. In addition to checking these components, Yannes also suggested that users maintain the cleanliness of the fuel tank and avoid storing B50 for too long to preserve fuel quality. Routine servicing at authorised workshops or workshops that understand biodiesel characteristics is also recommended. According to Yannes, implementing these measures is sufficient to maintain the reliability of diesel vehicles when using B50. “With consistent normal maintenance, our diesel vehicles can use B50 safely and optimally,” Yannes explained. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has stated that all sectors are ready to implement the mandatory B50 policy ahead of its inauguration by President Prabowo Subianto, scheduled for July 2026. ESDM spokesperson Dwi Anggia explained that readiness to implement B50 will be carried out simultaneously across all sectors. B50 has been tested in various vehicles, such as heavy equipment, ships, trains, and other vehicles used in mining, excavators, and agriculture.
