The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has revealed that complex geological structures and soft soil conditions were among the factors that worsened the damage caused by the tectonic earthquake in Central Sulawesi.

Speaking at a press conference analysing the Central Sulawesi earthquake in Jakarta on Friday, Head of the Geological Agency Lana Saria stated that the geological complexity in the affected area triggered massive ground surface deformation.

“The main earthquake event, followed by numerous aftershocks, indicates complex geological conditions with diverse lithology types. The proximity of the epicentre to residential areas and the soft soil conditions amplified the shaking effects,” Lana said.

Additionally, the expert team on the ground, together with local residents, identified a natural phenomenon involving the receding of seawater in the Palu Bay area shortly after the earthquake struck. This phenomenon still requires further study.

The constant series of aftershocks occurring in the region is considered to resemble the characteristics of a swarm earthquake, where post-main shock stress changes are thought to also influence other active faults in the vicinity.

Reflecting on the various physical impacts that emerged, the Geological Agency stressed the importance of implementing spatial planning and disaster mitigation based on local geological conditions to reduce future disaster risks.

“Indeed, the various impacts that have emerged demonstrate the importance of geology-based mitigation to reduce risks in similar future events,” Lana said.
