Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) is continuously strengthening various sectors to remain competitive among the best universities in Indonesia and internationally. UMY faces competition not only from other private universities (PTS) but also from top state universities (PTN).

“In the current condition, UMY is in very strong competition with both PTS and PTN. We must struggle,” explained the Vice Rector for Resources at Ulam, Prof. Dr Dyah Mutiarin, during her remarks at the Media Gathering & Media Awards 2026 event at Ledok Sambi Ecopark on Saturday (6/6/2026).

Several sectors are being expanded and strengthened to establish UMY as a leading university. One of these measures, according to Dyah, involves adding facilities for students, lecturers, and staff.

Planned facilities include a daycare centre and a swimming pool. The daycare will be located within the female University Residence (Unires) area, which is already equipped with the Firdaus 2 clinic.

“The UMY daycare is intended to facilitate undergraduate, Master’s, and Doctoral students who may have infants, as well as lecturers and staff members who have families,” she explained.

“In the near future, we will also build a sports facility, specifically a swimming pool. The pool will be located near the dormitory, which will already feature a gym,” Dyah added.

In addition to expanding campus facilities, Dyah continued that UMY is also strengthening its publication and branding sectors. This is being achieved by building robust networks with the mass media.

This step is part of UMY’s effort to strengthen the ‘pentahelix’ sector. This endeavour is expected to reinforce UMY’s vision and mission, as reflected in its tagline, ‘Lead the Changes, Light the World’.

“We require very strong branding at this time to assist with student recruitment and promotion. We hope that the appreciation between both parties can be mutually beneficial and positive,” she said.

“The media is a strategic partner for us, especially as we highly value the Pentahelix model. The Pentahelix is about collaboration, and one of the key components is the media. This is extremely important,” Dyah concluded.
