Companies back transmigration

JAKARTA (JP): Fourteen Jakarta-based companies have expressed interest in a program for establishing industrial services at the Landasan Ulin transmigration project in Banjar, South Kalimantan.

Haryo Kusumowardhono of the Jakarta office of the Ministry of Transmigration told reporters the participation of the 14 companies follows the support by seven Jakarta-based firms of the same program last year.

"The seven companies got low interest loans of Rp 20 million (US$9,090) each from city-owned Bank DKI," he said, adding that the bank has agreed to provide similar credit for another 33 businessmen from Jakarta.

The provision of the loans is designed to enable the companies, which on the average send three transmigrants to run businesses at the transmigration sites, to buy houses and set up workshops.

Haryo explained that the businessmen joining the transmigration program will run enterprises in various sectors, including furniture. (31)
