Commuters Wait for Over an Hour at Juanda Station Amid Passenger Surge
Passenger congestion occurred at Juanda Station, Central Jakarta, as a result of simultaneous activities at Istiqlal Mosque and the National Monument (Monas). The high volume of passengers caused several commuters to wait around the station area before the crowds began to disperse.
Among those affected were Tri and Devi, residents of Depok, who waited for the congestion at Juanda to subside. They had travelled to Istiqlal Mosque for a religious event.
“Yes, it was very crowded, so we were waiting for it to empty while waiting in the park,” said Tri when met at Juanda Station on Sunday (20/9/2026).
They reported waiting since 1:00 PM WIB, and as of 1:00 PM, they had still not been able to depart. “We finished at 11:00 AM, but left (Istiqlal) at 12:00 PM because it was so crowded. We only arrived here around 1:00 PM,” Tri added.
Tri also explained the religious study session they attended at Istiqlal Mosque, noting they had departed from Depok as early as 5:00 AM WIB.
Similarly, Dwi, a resident of Cikarang, Bekasi, was attending the TNI Fair at Monas. Amidst the congestion at Juanda Station, he focused on keeping a close watch over his children.
“The children are the most important, sir. Secondly, it is about keeping an eye on valuables, like expensive mobile phones,” Dwi said when met at Juanda Station.
Dwi also shared details about the event he attended at Monas, where he and his children viewed various military equipment displayed by the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI).
“There were many things, sir. There were military vehicles, war vehicles, helicopters, as well as various ships, warships, and ammunition,” he said.
Previously, Juanda KRL Station experienced significant overcrowding, leading to the implementation of a temporary opening-and-closing system for access. Karina Amanda, VP Corporate Secretary of KAI Commuter Indonesia (KCI), explained that the congestion was due to the two concurrent events near the station.
“Today there are two activities: an event at Istiqlal Mosque and the TNI Fair at Monas, resulting in an increase in passenger volume at Juanda Station, which is the nearest station to both locations,” Karina explained when contacted on Sunday (20/9).
Juanda Station has since returned to normal operations. The station had previously implemented the opening-and-closing system due to the passenger buildup.
Observations at the location on Sunday (20/9) at 3:00 PM WIB showed that officers were no longer stationed around the stairs leading to the upper platform. Passengers were able to walk smoothly towards the platforms.
Queues were no longer visible around the station. Passengers arriving from the direction of the Juanda Transjakarta Bus Stop towards Juanda Street were able to enter Juanda Station without difficulty.
