Communications Ministry Strengthens Youth Digital Literacy to Prevent Cybercrime

The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Kemkomdigi) is strengthening digital literacy among the younger generation as an effort to prevent the various forms of digital crime that frequently occur. “Digital literacy is one of Kemkomdigi’s tasks to reduce crime in the digital realm, including targeting the younger generation,” said Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid at the Digital Crime Awareness Community Gathering in Medan on Saturday. Meutya stated that digital literacy is an essential skill that the public, especially the youth, must possess as they are the element most vulnerable to becoming potential victims. According to her, the younger generation is the demographic that uses internet access the most, with 230 million out of 280 million people in Indonesia recorded as users. “What we believe is most important and effective is improving digital literacy among the younger generation,” she said. On that occasion, the Minister invited the youth to become the most active individuals in rejecting all forms of digital crime. With the role and contribution of the younger generation, the former Chair of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives said that digital literacy can be felt and provide tangible benefits to all elements of society. “So indeed, in literacy activities, we often invite the younger generation. Although this concerns everyone, the youth are the largest users and feel the greatest impact,” she noted. Therefore, she hopes that the activities to be intensified by the ministry she leads can have a real impact in preventing and reducing digital crime. “These young people today will certainly become the nation’s successors. We will intensify efforts targeting organisations, communities, and others,” she said.
