Communications Minister Welcomes Meta's Intention to Comply with PP Tunas, Restricting Social Media for Children
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid has welcomed the good intentions of technology company Meta, owner of Facebook, Threads, and Instagram, to restrict children’s access to their social media platforms in accordance with Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 on the Governance of Electronic System Operators in Child Protection, or PP Tunas.
“Today, we are quite pleased to give our appreciation to Meta, which oversees Instagram, Facebook, and Threads, which after the inspection carried out yesterday, last Monday, then showed a compliant attitude in aligning their product features and services with the law in Indonesia,” she said at the Ministry of Communication and Digital office in Jakarta on Thursday afternoon.
According to her, Meta has changed the provisions in the Community Guidelines on its social media platforms.
Based on the Community Guidelines on Meta’s social media platforms, the Facebook, Instagram, and Threads platforms were originally accessible to children aged 13 and above.
Now, the Facebook, Instagram, and Threads platforms in Indonesia can only be accessed by users aged 16 and above in accordance with government provisions.
Meta’s legal representative in Indonesia and Meta’s Regional Asia Pacific Public Policy Officer Rafael Frankel have conveyed information regarding the changes to the Community Guidelines on Meta’s social media platforms to the Ministry of Communication and Digital of the Republic of Indonesia.
The restriction of access for service users aged under 16 on Meta’s social media platforms will be implemented starting Thursday (9/4).
Meta has also expressed its commitment to gradually de-activating accounts belonging to users under 16 years old, considering that the number of their service users in Indonesia reaches more than 100 million.
The gradual update regarding the restriction of children’s access to Meta’s social media platforms is expected to be completed by Friday (10/4).
“Technical issues are actually not an obstacle. This is a matter of willingness, a matter of intent from large platforms to comply with the law in Indonesia,” she said.
PP Tunas will be implemented starting 28 March 2026. The regulation covers restrictions on children’s access to digital platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Threads, X, Bigo Live, YouTube, TikTok, and Roblox.
Owners of digital platforms that as of Thursday (9/4) at 17.50 WIB have fully complied with PP Tunas include Meta (Threads, Instagram, Facebook), X, and Bigo Live.
The TikTok and Roblox platforms are considered to have partially complied with the provisions in PP Tunas. Google, as the owner of the YouTube platform, is considered not to have shown good intentions to comply with the regulation.
