Commotion as Long Wall Collapses onto SMPN 182 School Grounds in South Jakarta
A wall at SMPN 182 Kalibata collapsed, causing alarm among residents of Pancoran, South Jakarta. No casualties were reported in the incident.
As compiled on Tuesday (17/2/2026), police have launched an investigation into the wall collapse, examining possible negligence.
"The investigation is still ongoing," said Pancoran Police Chief Kompol Mansur.
Mansur said his team was still investigating to determine the cause and chronology of the school wall collapse. "It was known that the fence had already been leaning," he said.
The leaning wall had been the subject of a notification letter from the surrounding community, but no further action was taken before it eventually collapsed.
CCTV footage captured the moment the school wall collapsed on Sunday afternoon. The video went viral on social media via @wargajakarta.id.
**Residents to Pay Compensation**
Police confirmed there were no casualties in the incident. The owner of the property whose wall collapsed has agreed to pay compensation for damage to the school.
"There is damage to school building facilities, but the fence owner has taken responsibility for restoring them to their original condition," said Kompol Mansur when contacted on Monday (16/2).
The wall collapsed on Sunday (15/2) at approximately 11.30 WIB. Police said the property owner whose wall collapsed had already met and communicated with the school regarding compensation for damage to school facilities.
"Communication has been established with the school. They will take responsibility until the school building is restored to its original state," he said.
Mansur said the remaining debris from the collapsed wall also affected a water channel. He said the property owner had also agreed to remove the wall debris to prevent it from blocking the waterway.
"The fence owner is willing to remove the remnants of the fence — the stones and remaining wall sections — and move them aside. It also hit the river channel, so it needs to be cleared to prevent blockages," he said.
**BPBD DKI Reveals Cause of Wall Collapse**
The DKI Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) revealed the cause of the wall collapse. BPBD stated the wall collapsed due to unstable soil structure.
"The soil structure was unstable — it was reclaimed land — which caused the wall to collapse," said Isnawa Adji, Head of the BPBD DKI Jakarta Provincial Executive Agency, as reported by Antara on Monday (16/2).
He explained the wall collapse occurred on Sunday (15/2) at approximately 11.22 WIB on Jalan Kalibata Timur 1 Raya, RT/RW 02/08, Kalibata Sub-district, Pancoran District, South Jakarta. The wall collapsed suddenly because the soil serving as its foundation was not solid.
"A wall belonging to a resident, measuring 65 metres in length and 5.3 metres in height, suddenly collapsed towards SMPN 182," said Isnawa.
Losses from the incident are still being assessed.
"The site is currently being managed by the Water Resources Agency (Dinas SDA)," said Isnawa.
**No Criminal Elements Found**
Police assisted in the mediation process between SMPN 182 Kalibata, Pancoran, South Jakarta, and the owner of the collapsed wall to reach an agreement. Police stated there were no criminal elements in the wall collapse incident.
"We only mediated as an agreement has been reached. Therefore, there are no criminal elements," said Kompol Mansur, as reported by Antara on Monday (16/2).
Mansur said his team would continue to monitor the reconstruction promised by the wall owner. He said all parties hoped the new structure would be stronger to prevent a recurrence.
"Of course, we will continue to follow this through to completion. We have advised that the structure should be built stronger so that what we witnessed does not happen again," he said.
Additionally, Mansur noted that the owner of the collapsed wall, who runs a beauty clinic business, had promised to compensate by rebuilding the structure to its original condition, and the school had agreed to this commitment.
"What is certain is that there is already an agreement between the fence owner and the school for repairs," he said.
