Commodity Prices in Kuningan Rise, Red Bird's Eye Chili Reaches IDR 110,000 per Kilogram

The prices of chili and red onions have increased significantly this week. The Kuningan Regency Government, West Java, has implemented a low-price food movement (GPM) in response.

According to information gathered from the Kepuh Market, Kuningan District/Regency, the price of red chili has now reached IDR 35,000 to IDR 45,000 per kilogram, depending on the type, whereas previously the price of red chili was only IDR 35,000 to IDR 40,000 per kilogram.

A significant increase has occurred in the price of red bird’s eye chili, which now costs IDR 95,000 to IDR 110,000 per kilogram. Previously, red bird’s eye chili cost around IDR 80,000 to IDR 90,000 per kilogram.

In addition to chili, red onions have also increased in price, now selling for IDR 45,000 to IDR 50,000 per kilogram, up from IDR 40,000 per kilogram.

“Garlic prices remain stable at IDR 40,000 per kilogram,” said Neneng (44), a vegetable seller at the Kepuh Market, on Wednesday (February 25).

Neneng explained that the increase in chili and red onion prices is likely due to the heavy rain, which has caused a significant increase in the prices of these two commodities.

“Both chili and vegetables cannot last long now. Even when stored in the refrigerator, they still smell different and are no longer fresh,” said Neneng.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Food Security Agency (Diskatan) of Kuningan Regency, Wahyu Hidayah, explained that they have been holding the GPM since February 23, 2026, and it will be held in turn in 15 sub-districts in Kuningan Regency until March 11, 2026.

“Ramadan is synonymous with increased food demand,” said Wahyu.

Therefore, the government is present to carry out planned market interventions without disrupting market mechanisms.

Through the GPM, Wahyu hopes it can be an effective instrument to maintain price stability and people’s purchasing power.

“Food commodities in the GPM are sold below market prices,” said Wahyu.

These include rice, cooking oil, sugar, broiler eggs, chicken meat, beef, wheat flour, chili, onions, and fresh vegetables.

The food commodities sold in the GPM can be cheaper than market prices because the prices are suppressed through the Food Distribution Facilitation (FDP) scheme.

This is a form of financial support for distribution from the government to producers and distributors to make the supply chain more efficient and prices remain affordable.

“The GPM is held through a limited price subsidy mechanism to maintain the balance of distribution and the sustainability of food businesses,” explained Wahyu. (UL)
