Commitment to Environmental Protection: Polytama Successfully Promotes BATIK JAVING Programme
PT Polytama Propindo (Polytama) is fully committed to sustainable business practices. This commitment is embodied in the eco-innovation programme known as Plastic Material into Paving, or “BATIK JAVING”, which adopts a waste-to-resource approach. This involves utilising production by-products and scraps of used polypropylene (PP) packaging plastic as a substitute for sand. The material is combined with cement and moulded into paving blocks.
This approach is not only energy-efficient but can also be implemented by small-scale communities. The implementation of this programme has successfully reduced greenhouse gas emissions, decreased waste managed by third parties, and lowered total waste.
From a broader environmental impact perspective, the results of the 2025 Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study show reductions in 14 impact categories, including global warming potential, ozone depletion, acid rain, eutrophication, water footprint, and land use change.
Polytama does not stop at environmental aspects; it also strengthens community involvement through the Re-Di (Recycle by Disabled) social innovation programme, themed Waste for Empowerment: Overcoming the Limits of Impossibility. This programme promotes the transformation of waste management into an integrated system that adds social and economic value.
Through this programme, production waste is processed into innovative products such as the Polystep prosthetic leg, the first of its kind in Indonesia, and recycled furniture called Daurniture. The programme is supported by the Sate Lebah (Precise Waste Management Strategy) approach to enhance waste management effectiveness in the Indramayu region.
The impact of the Re-Di programme is significant, involving groups of people with disabilities, Paralympic athletes, students from SEHATI Primary School, groups of housewives who are former migrant workers, and disaster-vulnerable communities.
Furthermore, this programme has created a good category Social Return on Investment (SROI), indicating that every social investment yields greater benefits for the community.
One beneficiary, Suprayitno, expressed the real changes felt through this programme.
“We were used to being marginalised and invisible, but we cannot stay silent. We have overcome our limits of impossibility and now we are self-empowered and also empowering our peers,” he stated, quoted on Monday (20/4/2026).
In 2026, the company will collaborate with external partners to expand the application of eco-friendly materials. Looking ahead, Polytama has prepared a long-term sustainability strategy through the LCA approach and circular economy principles.
The tangible impacts of these two programmes are deeply felt by the community and have led Polytama to once again receive the PROPER Gold award for 2025. This achievement marks the sixth consecutive time Polytama has received PROPER Gold.
Polytama Director, Dwinanto Kurniawan, stated that this accomplishment reflects the company’s commitment and consistency in ensuring the sustainability of environmental and social aspects, which are core to its operations.
“This achievement proves that sustainability is not just a commitment but has become part of the way we conduct business, ensuring that every process delivers real benefits to the environment and society,” he said.
This sixth PROPER Gold award serves as evidence that Polytama’s consistency in practising sustainable business not only garners recognition but also creates measurable real impacts for the environment and society, while addressing increasingly stringent sustainability standards.
