Commission V of West Java Regional House of Representatives Presses Education Office to Take Action Following Death of SMAN 5 Bandung Student
BANDUNG — A member of Commission V of the West Java Regional House of Representatives, Iwan Koswara, has pressed the West Java Provincial Education Office to take immediate firm action following the death of a student from SMAN 5 Bandung, which is suspected to be related to a conflict between students of SMAN 5 and SMAN 2 Bandung.
Iwan, a Commission V member responsible for social welfare affairs, including the education sector, believes the incident must be treated with serious attention by the regional government, particularly the West Java Education Office.
According to him, the government cannot allow inter-student conflicts to escalate into violence that claims lives.
“The government, through the Education Office, must immediately take swift and firm action. This incident must not trigger prolonged conflict among students,” said Iwan on Saturday evening, 14 March 2026.
He stressed that anticipatory measures are crucial to prevent retaliation between student groups, which could worsen the situation. “There must be no retaliation. All parties must show restraint and hand over the handling process to the authorities and school officials,” he said.
Iwan also urged schools and the education office to conduct more rigorous coaching and supervision of students, including strengthening character education and monitoring student activities outside school premises.
He further called for coordination between schools, parents, and security forces to ensure the situation remains conducive and prevent further conflict among students.
“Student safety must be the top priority. This incident must serve as a lesson to strengthen supervision and coaching of students,” he said.
