JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Chairman of Commission V of the DPR, Lasarus, has highlighted discrepancies in data regarding railway level crossings between related ministries/agencies. He noted that 80 percent of railway accidents in Indonesia occur at level crossings that lack guards or barrier gates. “There are thousands of level crossings, but the data on the crossing gates is not optimal, because each ministry/agency has power that still needs to be synchronized,” Lasarus said during a working meeting on railway accident in Bekasi Timur, quoted from TVR Parlemen, Thursday (21/5/2026).

Furthermore, according to data from PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero), there are 3,674 level crossings. Meanwhile, from the Police’s Traffic Corps (Korlantas Polri), there are 3,693 level crossings. “That number affects how many gates are guarded and how many are not,” Lasarus said.” In addition, he pointed to Law Number 23 of 2007 on Railways which reinforces rules regarding level crossings. “Moreover, the DPR Commission V in budget and supervision meetings has firmly required the government to pay serious attention to the level crossings in question,” Lasarus said. “This is certainly a big PR for the government in organising Indonesian railways,” said PDI-P politician.
