Commission III Appreciates Swift Response from UI Faculty of Law Students in Handling Case
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Chair of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Habiburokhman, has appreciated the swift actions taken by the Executive Body of Students (BEM) and the Family Association of Students (IKM) at the Faculty of Law, University of Indonesia, in responding to the alleged sexual violence case involving several students.
According to him, the response conducted through an open forum such as a general public hearing (RDPU) is an important step in promoting transparency and accountability within the campus environment.
“We appreciate the BEM FH UI and IKM FH UI for quickly responding to the sexual violence case allegedly involving 16 FH UI students by holding a kind of ‘RDPU’ openly in the FH UI Auditorium,” said Habiburokhman in his statement in Jakarta on Wednesday.
He assessed that the forum provided space for students to express their views directly, including to the parties allegedly involved in the case.
“We see that female and male students could speak firmly directly to the alleged perpetrators to question their motives,” he said.
“The phenomenon of individuals committing violations can occur anywhere, but the institutional response from BEM UI and IKM FH UI is very good because their ‘RDPU’ prioritises speed, openness, and firmness,” he stated.
He hopes that the handling of the case can proceed fairly, ensuring that those proven guilty are held accountable.
“We believe this sexual violence case can be resolved well, meaning that those who are guilty are held accountable proportionately,” he said.
The swift and open response is considered part of efforts to build a safe academic environment and encourage victims and witnesses to report without fear.
In addition, transparency in handling the case is expected to strengthen public trust in the mechanisms for resolving violations in higher education institutions.
