Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Chairman of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Dave Laksono, has reminded of the importance of strengthening national sovereignty amid increasingly heated global geopolitical dynamics, while maintaining consistency in the free and active foreign policy.

In the “Dialectics of Democracy” discussion at the Parliamentary Complex in Jakarta on Wednesday, Dave assessed that prolonged global conflicts demand that Indonesia adopt an adaptive yet principled stance in safeguarding national interests.

“If it were just Russia and Ukraine, this conflict should have ended long ago. However, the fact is, there are supplies of weapons, technology, and personnel from various countries,” he stated in his remarks.

He spotlighted the Russia-Ukraine war, which has lasted more than three years, as strong evidence of the involvement of many global actors beyond the two nations.

Additionally, Dave warned of the risks of foreign nationals, including from Indonesia, becoming involved in armed conflicts as mercenaries, often lured by financial rewards but facing high risks.

In the Middle East region, he observed the escalation of tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. Nevertheless, Iran’s internal stability is deemed to remain intact.

“The leadership transition in Iran occurred quickly. This shows they do not cultify individuals but prioritise ideology,” he said.

According to him, these geopolitical dynamics also impact the global economy, particularly fluctuations in energy prices. However, the Indonesian Government is considered capable of mitigating the effects through fiscal policies.

“The Government, including President Prabowo and the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, has managed to contain the impact of rising oil prices through APBN management,” Dave stated.

He also reminded of the need to anticipate hybrid threats, including potential impacts from conflicts in the South China Sea region and tensions between China and Taiwan.

In that context, Dave emphasised the importance of maintaining balanced international relations, given Indonesia’s strategic position amid global competition.

“China is Indonesia’s main trading partner, but we also need technological support and cooperation from the United States and Europe. So, relations must remain balanced,” he said.

Indonesia, Dave continued, needs to strengthen its role in international forums to promote concrete and sustainable peaceful solutions.

“Indonesia must continue to push for permanent solutions to global conflicts, so that it does not stop at mere discourse but truly results in peace,” he said.
