Commission I of the House of Representatives Calls for Indonesia to Play a Role Following US-Israel Attack on Iran
Vice Chairman of Commission I of the House of Representatives Dave Laksono has called on the Indonesian government to take an active role following attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran. Laksono stated that the government must promptly evacuate Indonesian nationals (WNI) from Iran.
“We must be on alert and prepare various contingency plans to evacuate our citizens in affected areas should the situation develop further,” Laksono said when contacted on Sunday (29/2/2026).
Laksono urged the government to contribute to resolving the conflict through diplomatic channels. He emphasised that Indonesia must prioritise an independent and active foreign policy.
“From a diplomatic perspective, Indonesia consistently encourages conflict resolution through peaceful dialogue and negotiation. Our foreign policy principle is independence and active participation, so Indonesia will continue to call for respect for international law, national sovereignty, and dispute settlement without violence,” he explained.
“Commission I of the House of Representatives reiterates that this escalation has far-reaching consequences, but Indonesia must remain committed to the principles of peaceful diplomacy, maintain domestic stability, and strengthen international cooperation to avoid being drawn into a prolonged conflict,” he added.
Laksono noted that the tensions in the Middle East could have broad implications, including creating uncertainty in trade routes, particularly in the energy sector. He urged the government to take steps to ensure that the conflict does not impact Indonesia’s economy.
“From a security perspective, escalation of the conflict can trigger political and ideological resonance across various parts of the world. Indonesia, as a country with the world’s largest Muslim population, needs to maintain public calm and ensure that differences of opinion do not develop into polarisation that harms national unity,” he explained.
As reported, the militaries of the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran on Saturday (28/2) local time. Explosions were heard in the cities of Isfahan, Qom, Karaj, and Kermanshah, as well as in the capital Tehran.
Iran subsequently retaliated following attacks by Tel Aviv on Tehran and several other regions. Missile attacks from Iran activated air raid warning sirens in several areas of Israel.
