Commission D Calls for Updated Slum Data to Ensure Targeted Settlement Improvements

The Jakarta Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) has requested the Jakarta Provincial Government strengthen the mapping of slum neighbourhoods (RW kumuh) so that settlement improvement programmes can be more accurately targeted. Commission D Chairwoman Yuke Yurike stated that data accuracy is a crucial factor in determining which areas require government intervention through village improvement and environmental quality enhancement programmes. “Jakarta’s data should be more real-time. We have many data sources that can be used to view conditions on the ground more currently,” Yuke said at the DPRD building on Tuesday. According to her, the improvement of slum RWs cannot rely solely on old data. The regional government needs to utilise various information sources, including public reports, data from urban wards and sub-districts, and monitoring results from relevant agencies. Yuke explained that the ongoing Community Action Plan (CAP) and Community Infrastructure Program (CIP) need continuous evaluation to truly address residents’ needs. Beyond environmental infrastructure issues, she highlighted the high number of complaints regarding basic sanitation, such as the availability of communal toilets (MCK) and homes that still lack adequate sanitation facilities. “There are still many complaints regarding MCK. This must be a shared concern. Which matters fall under housing and which under water resources, everything must be coordinated,” she said. She added that the involvement of RT, RW, urban wards, and sub-districts is very important in the data collection process so that environmental issues missed by official mapping can still be promptly addressed.
