Commemorating World Environment Day, Pertamina Plants Trees and Strengthens Waste Management Innovation
In commemoration of World Environment Day 2026, PT Pertamina (Persero) has commenced a series of environmental programme activations, involving the planting of 1,000 tree seedlings and the strengthening of community-based waste management innovations at the TPS3R facility in Guwosari Village, Bantul Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta, on Friday (5/6/2026).
The kick-off event included simultaneous tree planting across the Pertamina Group’s operational areas, including the Plaju Refinery, Elnusa, and other operational units. The Corporate Secretary of PT Pertamina (Persero), Arya Dwi Paramutya, who led the commemoration in Yogyakarta, stated that this step is part of Pertamina’s ongoing commitment to supporting climate change mitigation efforts. This initiative also addresses the challenges of waste management, which remains a major environmental issue in Indonesia, aligning with the theme of World Environment Day: ‘It is Time to Work for Climate’.
In addition to tree planting, Pertamina provided assistance for the Go-Sari Edupark Programme worth IDR 150 million. This funding is intended to support the development of the Go-Sari waste collection application, biochar innovation, poultry farming, and the ‘Rewulu Reborn’ programme, which processes fuel tanker seal waste into economically valuable products.
Arya noted that the selection of TPS3R Guwosari as the kick-off location was intentional. The site, managed by the Rewulu Fuel Terminal under Pertamina Patra Niaga Regional Central Java, serves as a prime example of how collaboration between corporations, communities, and academics can provide innovative solutions to waste problems. “World Environment Day serves as a momentum for Pertamina to continue strengthening real action in environmental preservation. We chose TPS3R Guwosari as the starting point because it demonstrates integrated waste management that provides tangible economic and social benefits to the community,” Arya stated.
The Village Head of Guwosari, Masduki, explained that the integrated waste management initiative has assisted 1,500 households and provided income for over 27 residents, including the elderly, through various roles such as waste collection, sorting, pressing, composting, and poultry maintenance. “We encourage residents to sort waste at home; the better the sorting, the lower the processing costs, or even zero cost, and through these activities, supporting workers can earn salaries of approximately IDR 2 million to 3 million,” he explained.
Various initiatives developed at TPS3R Guwosari include converting organic waste into biochar for use as filter material in fuel tanker exhausts, utilising plastic waste for pallets and furniture, and transforming tanker seal waste into useful handicrafts. These innovations aim to reduce waste accumulation while creating added value for the local community.
Pertamina’s World Environment Day commemorations will continue on 10 June 2026, featuring a coastal waste management programme using a trash skimmer innovation, a collaboration between Pertamina and the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS). Nationally, by 2026, the Pertamina Group has implemented 151 environmental programmes based on waste management and the circular economy. These programmes have successfully processed approximately 951,023 tonnes of waste per year, benefiting 68,788 recipients and creating sustainable economic impacts.
Arya emphasised that environmental innovation is implemented not only through community empowerment but also through corporate operations using technology and eco-friendly business practices. “Sustainability is a vital part of Pertamina’s business strategy. Therefore, we continue to drive various innovations, both within the community and our operational processes, to reduce environmental impact while supporting Indonesia’s energy transition and sustainable development targets,” Arya concluded.
