The Hamas group commemorated the 26th anniversary of the Second Intifada, also known as the Al-Aqsa Intifada, on Monday (28/09/2026). Reflecting on this moment of resistance, Hamas asserted that they remain steadfast in their mission to liberate Palestinian land from Israel.

“Our compass will remain firmly directed towards liberating the land and holy sites, and we call upon our nation and free people across the world to support the struggle and the steadfastness of our people until they secure their legitimate rights,” Hamas stated in a declaration, as reported by the Middle East Monitor.

Hamas revealed that the 26th anniversary of the Second Intifada takes place amidst unprecedented escalations against religious holy sites in the East Jerusalem region, particularly the Al-Aqsa Mosque. “This is accompanied by Israeli protection for extremist settlers and efforts towards the Judaisation of Al-Aqsa, defiling it, and erasing its special status, as well as advancing plans for annexation and displacement,” the group added.

Nevertheless, Hamas emphasised that the Palestinian people will not relinquish their land, rights, national principles, or holy sites. “Israel’s measures will not succeed in extinguishing the flame of resistance or undermining the determination and will of the Palestinian people,” Hamas stated.

The group called upon Arab and Muslim nations, as well as supporters worldwide, to take political, diplomatic, media, and popular action to support Palestine, including opposing measures targeting the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Hamas expressed its belief that Israel’s desire to marginalise Palestinian existence is destined to fail.

The Second Intifada began on 28 September 2000. The catalyst was a visit by the Israeli opposition leader, Ariel Sharon, to the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex. He visited the third holiest site in Islam under heavy security escort.

Sharon’s visit was perceived as a provocative act. It ignited the anger of Palestinians, which ultimately led to the Second Intifada. The Palestinian resistance during the Second Intifada lasted for more as than four years.

During that period, 4,412 Palestinians were killed, while the number of wounded exceeded 48,000 people.
