The Governor of North Sumatra, Muhammad Bobby Afif Nasution, has deployed joint personnel consisting of the Civil Service Police Unit (Satpol PP), the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the National Police (Polri), and the National Narcotics Board (BNN) to conduct patrols in several areas identified as entry points for drug trafficking and zones prone to juvenile delinquency. This measure is intended to strengthen the prevention and eradication of narcotics while protecting the younger generation from various forms of social deviation.

One of the primary targets of these joint patrols is the Asahan Regency. The Head of the North Sumatra Satpol PP, Moettaqiente Hasrimi, stated that between January and May 2026, 150 drug-related cases were recorded in the region. Geographically, North Sumatra holds a very strategic position with a long coastline; however, this condition also presents vulnerabilities, as drug syndicates frequently exploit these routes for smuggling.

“Based on the figures on the ground, the urgency of this matter cannot be delayed,” said Moettaqien while leading the joint patrol assembly at the Asahan Regent’s Office parade ground on Saturday night, 6 June 2026.

Consequently, the North Sumatra Provincial Government, alongside relevant agencies, organised joint patrols targeting several locations, particularly nightlife venues in Asahan Regency. At every location visited, joint personnel conducted data collection and urine tests on patrons. Based on the examination results, all tested samples returned negative, with no visitors found to be using drugs.

In addition to drug trafficking, Moettaqien also warned that online gambling is an issue that requires serious attention. He noted that teenagers addicted to online gambling are at risk of falling into drug abuse and committing criminal acts to obtain funds.

“The security and safety of our younger generation are currently at stake. Therefore, environmental awareness and the supervision of teenagers are of utmost importance,” he stated. He also called upon all elements of society to play an active role in maintaining the social environment and safeguarding the future of the youth, emphasising that caring for the surrounding community and our teenagers is a collective responsibility.
