Colombian Couple Detained While Busking at Druwo Intersection in Bantul
Two Colombian nationals were secured by immigration officers after being caught performing acrobatic displays on the streets in the Bantul area. The pair are suspected of misusing their residence permits while in Indonesia.
The Head of the Class II TPI Immigration Office in Kulon Progo, Mohammad Wahyudiyantoro, stated that the enforcement action stemmed from routine patrols monitoring foreigners by the intelligence and immigration enforcement team. Officers found the two Colombian nationals, a man with initials GM (30) and a woman with initials LV (26), performing at the Druwo intersection in Sewon, Bantul.
” Officers discovered the pair performing acrobatics while requesting rewards or donations from road users,” Wahyudiyantoro said in a written statement on Wednesday (22/4/2026).
After initial field examinations, officers obtained information that the money from the performances was used to meet daily living needs, including accommodation rental costs in Indonesia. Their passports were then secured, and they were asked to report to the immigration office for further examination.
“From the examination results, it was found that they entered Indonesia using a Visa on Arrival via Batam on 23 March 2026 for tourism purposes,” he said.
However, the activities they carried out were deemed inconsistent with their residence permit. Based on further investigation, they are suspected of violating Article 122 letter a of Law No. 6 of 2011 on Immigration regarding the misuse of residence permits.
“For this violation, we have imposed Immigration Administrative Action in the form of detention in the detention room at the Kulon Progo Immigration Office,” he explained.
Wahyudiyantoro emphasised that this step is part of implementing the selective policy principle, namely that only foreigners who provide benefits are permitted to stay in Indonesian territory.
“For follow-up, they will be processed for deportation. However, if sufficient evidence is found, it does not rule out continuation to pro justitia proceedings,” he asserted.
He also urged the public to actively participate in reporting the presence of suspicious foreigners or those suspected of immigration violations.
“We provide a 24-hour complaint service. The public should not hesitate to report if they find activities that disrupt public order or are inconsistent with residence permits,” he concluded.
